Upgrading to a Newer Version of Python#

To upgrade to a newer version of Python, e.g., 3.8.5:

sudo apt update

sudo apt-get install -y build-essential tk-dev libncurses5-dev libncursesw5-dev libreadline6-dev libdb5.3-dev libgdbm-dev libsqlite3-dev libssl-dev libbz2-dev libexpat1-dev liblzma-dev zlib1g-dev libffi-dev

wget https://www.python.org/ftp/python/3.8.5/Python-3.8.5.tgz

tar zxf Python-3.8.5.tgz
cd Python-3.8.5
./configure --enable-optimizations
make -j4
sudo make install
or
sudo make altinstall
if you don't want it to be the default.

Replace "3.8.5" above with whatever version you want to install. You can browse the directory at: https://www.python.org/ftp/python
